Shalom United Church of Christ
New Haven
An Open and Affirming Congregation
Shalom United Church of Christ (Shalom UCC) is an open and affirming member congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC). We seek to deepen our faith through vital worship and prayer and are committed to living our faith, by vigorous and intentional engagement in the pursuit of peace and justice here in New Haven and in the world. As a congregation, we covenant together to serve as God’s ambassadors of reconciliation and healing.
A Glimpse of Shalom’s Online Worship, Easter 2020: Always Doing a New Thing.
Shalom Worship since Covid-19
During Covid, Shalom moved its worship online. We continue to worship online for many of our liturgies, but through the generosity of a Lily grant, we have acquired the equipment to be able to offer fully participatory hybrid services. Since the fall of 2023 we began holding hybrid services, usually scheduling two such services a month. Whether online or hybrid, we meet at 5:30 each Sunday evening. Our worship experience continues to be very participatory and interactive, with communion celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month. One advantage to having every service include Zoom: we now have people able to join our service from afar.
We welcome all and would love to have you join us. To do so, just email Charlie Pillsbury at chapillsburymbb@gmail.com. On Saturday he sends out Sunday’s worship bulletin and the Zoom information to connect by computer or phone. He will happily add you to the distribution list. If you would like to receive Shalom’s weekly “Shalom News,” please email our coordinator, Carol Wade at carolrwade@gmail.com.
While our worship venue has changed, the format for our liturgy has not, nor have we as a congregation. We continue to be a small, intentional congregation, open to the Spirit's prompting as we explore new ways to be church and seek to discern God's call to us as a body of Christ. Leadership is shared and collaborative; no one voice has particular privilege. We cultivate the shared ministries of all who participate in Shalom's worship and work. We have no paid staff nor do we own a building. We rent space for our hybrid services from Shalom’s sister UCC congregation, United Church on the Green, New Haven.
